Joan Arlene Skare

Joan Skare, age 82, of Byron, MN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at her home, surrounded by family. She was born on May 24, 1942, in Odebolt, IA, to Kermit and Doris (Hanson) Johnson, Joan was a vibrant spirit whose love for music and kindness to others touched the lives of many.

A proud graduate of Odebolt High School in 1960, Joan’s passion for music was evident from a young age. She served as the organist at her church and directed the youth choir, sharing her love of music with countless children. Her father often took her to department stores during the holiday season, where she delighted shoppers by playing the piano, creating a joyful atmosphere during festive times.

Beyond her musical talents, Joan was known for her creativity and generosity. She enjoyed knitting, crafting beautiful prayer shawls for those in need, and loved making whimsical gnomes to share with friends and family. Joan was also an avid gardener, nurturing her plants with the same love and care she showed to everyone around her. Her sense of humor and warm spirit earned her the affectionate nickname “GJO” among her loved ones.

Joan worked as a pharmacy technician at the Mayo Clinic, Methodist Hospital. She made wall hangings and would hang them in the cancer ward while doing visitation. Her caring nature and dedication were evident in her interactions with patients and colleagues alike. She had a special fondness for animals, particularly her beloved German Shepherds.

Joan is survived by her two sons, Mark Albers and Dan Johnson; her grandchildren, Nick (Macy Barrington) Johnson, Kindy (Bobby) Hirsch, Melissa (Gunner) Kieler, Kimberly, and Kristen; as well as her great-grandsons, Kayson and Eli. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael, and her husband, Ernie Skare.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Christ Lutheran Church, 201 Frontage Rd. NW, Byron, with Rev. Judy Thompson-Reitz officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church in Joan’s memory.

Joan will be remembered for her loving nature, creativity, and the light she brought into the lives of those who knew her. She will be dearly missed.
